Asbestos containing materials (ACMs) remain present in many buildings constructed prior to 1990 and can present a significant health risk if disturbed. Under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, duty holders are responsible for identifying and managing asbestos in the workplace through the preparation and maintenance of an asbestos register and asbestos management plan where required.

A pre-demolition survey should be conducted prior to demolition works or refurbishment. This is to ensure that materials that have the potential to cause a health or environmental hazard are not disturbed during works.
